Orange - Light Up and Take Actions for a Da Nang City Safe and Free from Violence Against Women and Children

  • Da Nang City, November 28, 2020 - Two iconic bridges of Da Nang, the Dragon Bridge and the Han River Bridge, will turn brilliant orange for an hour from the evening of November 28th to December 15th. This is the activity demonstrating Da Nang City's commitment to taking actions in elimination of violence against women and children towards building a safe and friendly Da Nang City for all local people.

The activity of “colouring orange” two famous bridges of Da Nang City is part of the program “Orange - Light up and take actions” for a Da Nang City which is safe and free from violence against women and children. The Da Nang City Women's Union (WU) has collaborated with the City People's Committee with the support of the United Nations Entity on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment (UN Women). The program aims to respond to the “Month of Action for Gender Equality and Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response” in 2020 and the 16 Days Activism to end gender-based violence.

The program is held to launch communication activities, contributing to raising awareness for the whole society, creating a pervasive power in the community to join hands in exercising gender equality and in prevention and response to violence against women and children in the city.

Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Huong - Member of the City Party Committee, Chairwoman of Da Nang City Women's Union said: “In recent years, Da Nang City Party Committee has promulgated a great variety of guidelines and policies to support, encourage and call upon local people to join hands in prevention and response to violence against women and children. In particular, Directive No. 39-CT/TU dated April 24, 2020 of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee on “Building a safe Da Nang City free from violence against women and children” is a very important policy to join hands in building a Da Nang free from violence against women and children. In an effort to effectively implement Directive No. 39-CT/TU of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, the City Women's Union advised the formulation of the project “Building a safe Da Nang City free from violence against women and children”. Especially, the activity “lighting orange lights” over the 2 famous bridges: Han River Bridge and Dragon Bridge from November 28th to end of December 15th, will surely attract the attention of organizations, individuals and communities to join hands in elimination of violence against women and children, towards building a safe Da Nang city free from violence against women and children”.

In his remarks delivered at the program, Mr. Le Trung Chinh - Deputy Secretary of Da Nang City Party Committee, Standing Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee committed to coordinate with Da Nang City Women's Union to soon issue and proactively deploy the Project “Building a safe Da Nang city free from violence against women and children”, towards establishment of a wealthy, beautiful, peaceful, civilized and modern city of Da Nang.

Ms. Elisa Fernandez Saenz, Chief Representative of UN Women in Viet Nam revealed that “Orange is the symbolic colour used worldwide for the campaigns and activities pertinent to the elimination of gender-based violence. Orange represents brilliance, innovation and hope for women and children who are survivors of violence. Through this activity, we urge for participation of all citizens, especially men, so that regardless of being at home, at school, at work or in public places, women and children will be safe and respected

The program was attended by Ms. Ha Thi Nga - President of Vietnam Women's Union; Mr. Luong Nguyen Minh Triet - Standing Deputy Secretary of Da Nang City Party Committee; Mr. Le Trung Chinh – Standing Vice Chairman of Da Nang City People's Committee; representatives of Women's Union leaders of various provinces/cities; representatives of leaders from People's Council, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, departments, sectors, associations and unions of the city; representatives of leaders from People's Committees of districts; staff of WUs at all levels and more than 500 members of Da Nang City WU.

Activities in the program include: “Orange Coffee”, “Orange light” and co-performance of physical exercises and sports coupled with songs and dances, communication activities in the community; In particular, the activity of “lighting the orange lights” of bridges - typical works of the city will be the beacon of the program, with the desire to spread the message “light up and take actions” to all the city residents to join hands in elimination of violence against women and children, towards the goal of building a safe Da Nang city free from violence against women and children.
