UNESCO supports Aeterna film production promoting human and cultural diversity

07 June 2017

  • Ha Noi, 7 June 2017 - From May 31 to June 6 2017, UNESCO in collaboration with the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism provided support to the shooting of the movie, Aeterna, produced by FASAD, a Swedish production company, in four locations of Viet Nam. The cinematic odyssey celebrates human and cultural diversity on the planet, with images shot in 13 countries.

Being a non-profit production, the film aims to highlight the positive aspects of everyday life in various parts of the world. In Viet Nam, scenes captured farming activities in Mu Cang Chai rice terraces, Cam Pha traditional mining, and net fishing and family gatherings in Hoi An.

With funding by the Swedish Film Institute, under patronage of the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO, Aeterna is directed by two well-established Swedish directors, Fredrik Wenzel and Jesper Kurlandsky.

FASAD Production Company produces feature films, documentaries and short and experimental cinema. As stated by the company, the movie "Aeterna is a poetic representation of the Anthropocene and an introduction to the way we, as a people, should move forward. Communicating with the audience through contemplative and reflective images, which aim to create an understanding of the problem, as well as inciting change. Using a language of compassion and beauty, instead of fear and judgment, Aeterna is a powerful cinematic experience, which aims to reintegrate our civilisation with the environment."

The film will premiere live globally with the Swedish Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen in August 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden. UNESCO, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and FASAD are discussing possibilities for promotion of the movie through cultural events between Viet Nam and Sweden in the years to come.
