WHOVN#035 – National STC on malaria elimination strategy
Background:
Malaria burden is significantly declining over the years in Viet Nam. The prevalence of malaria in Viet Nam continues to fall and is now concentrated in the country's northern and central areas. The number of cases reported by Viet Nam in 2023 was 441, a 2.64% reduction compared to 2021 (467 cases were reported in 2021). As of August 2024, 46 provinces which has no locally transmitted malaria in the last five years were classified as malaria elimination provinces.
The five-year national strategy for malaria elimination (2021-2025) aims to address priorities in malaria endemic areas, further drive malaria burden down and prevent reintroduction of malaria transmission in targeted areas and monitor drug resistant malaria. The current plan prioritizes malaria core interventions in accordance with the present situation and reinforces the country’s vision of reaching a malaria-free status by 2030.
Despites of substantial reduction in number of malaria cases over the years in the whole country, in several provinces, number of malaria cases has increased. Moreover, antimalarial drug resistance remains an ongoing concern.
As the current national strategy for elimination of malaria is ending in 2025, there is a need to development of the new National strategy for elimination of malaria for new period 2026-2030.
