International experts gathered in Hanoi to help enhance the quality of industrial policy in Vietnam

This training workshop is conducted under the framework of the project "Support to the Government of Viet Nam in the formulation of Sub-Sector Industrial Strategy and of the related Implementation Policy through Institutional Capacity Building", funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The project aims at enhancing the quality of Viet Nam's industrial development strategy and policy through building institutional capacity, compiling industrial reports for the public and the private sector, and proposing concrete strategies and policies to enhance Viet Nam's industrial competitiveness.

Previous workshops, organized throughout the year, conveyed some of the basic principles and tools and outlined the benefits of evidence-based industrial policymaking. This training showcased studies on horizontal factors such as population ageing, Industry 4.0, and the current China-US trade relations and their impact on selected sectors including textile and apparel, leather, automotive, electronics and food processing. Inputs from this training are meant to inform a White Paper on Vietnam's New Industrial Strategy to be launched in June 2019.

Faculty includes experts from UNIDO and the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) as well as representatives from various Vietnamese business associations.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Jung Jaehwan, UNIDO Project Manager said: "This training workshop is one of a series of capacity development activities throughout 2018 for senior policymakers in Vietnam. It is under the on-going project which aims at strengthening the capacities of policymakers from Viet Nam to design, implement, evaluate and update their country's industrial policy and strategies. Learning will be based on international best practice and innovative research and conducted by a combination of researchers, practitioners and policymakers."
