New collaboration between UNFPA and the General Statistical Office on Population & Development Data

  • HA NOI, 19 December 2017 – A new collaboration on providing UNFPA's support for the General Statistics Office (GSO) and other partners at national and sub-national levels in providing and utilizing quality population and development data and evidence to develop and monitor socio-economic development policies, strategies and plans, and Sustainable Development Goals in Viet Nam in the period 2017-2021 was signed today at an official ceremony in Ha Noi attended by representatives of Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), GSO, the Parliamentary Committee for Social Affairs (PCSA), Viet Nam's Fatherland Front Central Committee (VFF), Central Committee on Popularization and Education (CCPE), other line ministries, research institutes, the United Nations agencies, and development partners in Viet Nam.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, GSO General Director said: "Over the past forty years of corporation between Viet Nam and UNFPA, the GSO has showed its professional capacity in receiving effectively technical assistance from UNFPA and we commit to implementing the activities during the period 2017-2021 at highest capacity towards the implementation of Viet Nam Statistical Strategy and the Sustainable Development Goals ".

With the total budget of USD5.6 million for four years from 2017 to 2021, of which USD4.3 million is funded by UNFPA, the project aims to provide technical support for the Government of Viet Nam in collecting and utilizing quality population related data and evidence for development, amendment, implementation and monitoring of socio-economic policies, strategies and planning to achieve sustainable and harmonious development of population, economy, society and environment of Viet Nam.

The project is co-implemented by GSO, MPI; PCSA, VFF, with the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), CCPE and the Viet Nam National Committee on Ageing (VNCA) as participating partners, and with technical assistance from UNFPA in Viet Nam. This collaboration is part of the One Strategic Plan being jointly delivered by the Government of Viet Nam and United Nations for the period 2017-2021.

"We hope this project, through multi-sectoral coordination, will play a key role in strengthening the capacity of GSO and relevant partners in collecting, analyzing, disseminating, and utilizing information/data on population, reproductive health and gender, contributing to the implementation and monitoring of socio-economic development policies, and the Plan of Action of SDGs," said Ms. Astrid Bant, UNFPA Representative in Viet Nam.

It was emphasized that this project through remarkable joint efforts by a range of stakeholders including Government ministries and agencies, provinces and the international development partners working together and under the effective coordination of the GSO, will contribute to Viet Nam's achievement of its socio-economic development plan in the period 2016-2020 and the Viet Nam Sustainable Development Goals.
