Green transport for greening Viet Nam

  • Ha Noi, 25 November 2017 - The event "Green transport for greening Viet Nam" takes place at Ha Noi Botanical Garden, known as the green lung of Ha Noi capital city. The program was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Ha Noi Institute for Socio-Economic Development Studies, Ha Noi Youth Union, students from universities in Ha Noi, organizations and individuals, especially the Ambassador for green growth awareness raising campaign - Miss Friendly 2008 Duong Thuy Linh.

In his opening speech at the event, Mr Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Director General of the Department of Science, Education, Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Planning and Investment, said: The event "Green transport for greening Viet Nam" is an important communication activity, mobilizing the participation of a large number of people with the aim of conveying messages about green lifestyle and green growth to the community, especially the youth and students, that helps raise awareness and positive impact on the behaviour of the future owners of the country. This event will also motivate green transport activities of all people in the capital city.

At the event, Ms Akiko Fujii, UNDP Deputy Country Director highlighted that: " Green growth sounds abstractedly and difficult to implement, but in fact, it can be easily done by an example of today event ". "I believe each of you will be the ambassador of green transport – green growth so we can maintain and spread today’s motivation and momentum. Green transport will be used by a wider society – for a greener Viet Nam”, Ms Fujii added.

Participating as the Ambassador for green growth campaign - Miss Friendly 2008 Duong Thuy Linh will inspire the participants. She hopes with the efforts of ministries, departments and the whole society, young people will understand their responsibility and participate more actively in the cause of sustainable development of the country.

"Green transport for greening Viet Nam" and the Green Growth campaign not only represent an active lifestyle, cycling activity in particular and use of low-emission vehicles in general also the joint efforts of ministries, sectors, localities and enterprises, that helps Viet Nam rapidly achieve the objectives of the Viet Nam Green Growth Strategy and Action Plan.

Background Information:

The Ministry of Planning and Investment is the focal point for green growth, responsible for leading and coordinating with concerned ministries, sectors, People’s Committee of provinces and cities, collaborating with international development partners to mobilize financial resources to implement the Viet Nam Green Growth Strategy and Action Plan, and for acting as the Coordinating agency for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The program "Green transport for greening Viet Nam" is one of the activities of the program "Delivery of Communication Plan including Green Growth Week, sustainable consumption in transport and trade, promote green production, consumption and lifestyle models... “within the framework of the Project “Strengthening Capacity and Institutional Reform for Green Growth and Sustainable Development in Viet Nam” (CIGG). The Project aims to build capacities and strengthen policies and regulations for the effective implementation of the Viet Nam Green Growth Strategy and achieving sustainable development goals. The Project is implemented by the Department of Science, Education, Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Planning and Investment, funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
