The UN Women WeEmpowerAsia WEPs Awards of UN Women Asia and Pacific

Celebrating 10 years of the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), the European Union funded project WeEmpowerAsia launches the UN Women Asia and Pacific WEPs Awards to recognise exemplary business practices for gender equality.

WeEmpowerAsia (WEA) is a collaborative effort between UN Women and the European Union (EU), which is funding the action under its Partnership Instrument. The overall objective of WeEmpowerAsia is that more women lead, participate and have access to enhanced business opportunities and leadership within the private sector to advance sustainable and inclusive growth. The programme is implemented in seven selected middle-income countries in the Asia-Pacific, namely China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The Viet Nam Women Entrepreneur Council is the national partners of UN Women WeEmpowerAsia in Viet Nam

 At the core of WeEmpowerAsia’s private sector area of focus is mobilizing companies to commit to and implement the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), which were formulated and launched by UN Women and the UN Global Compact in 2010. The WEPs are a set of 7 principles that support companies to take a gender-sensitive approach throughout their value chain starting with corporate leadership and looking across the wider value chain from workplace, marketplace and community.

2020 is an important milestone for the WEPs - celebrating their 10th anniversary coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Beijng Declaration and facilitating the implementation of the gender equality law in business community through the application of WEPs. To mark this occasion, UN Women WeEmpowerAsia is organizing the WEPs Awards in the Asia-Pacific. The WEPs Awards are to encourage and recognize the efforts of companies that promote practices, programs and actions to create more gender-inclusive business cultures embracing the gender equality and women’s empowerment, raise awareness and mobilize more companies to implement the WEPs within their own business.

 

The WEPs Awards includes 5 categories:

  1.  Leadership Commitment
  2. Workplace Gender Equality  
  3. Gender-responsive Marketplace  
  4. Community and Industry Engagement
  5. COVID-19 Action

Application:

  1. Applications are open to all companies, regardless of size or sector, in the Asia-Pacific who exhibit good practices of promoting gender equality that meet one or more of the Award categories and whose CEOs (present or past) have signed or intend to sign the WEPs CEO Statement of Support.
  2. Companies are able to apply for up to two of the five awards categories.
  3. Applications are received from 26/8/2020 to 25/09/2020 online in the website www.asiapacificwepsawards.org.

 

WEPs awards ceremonies

  1. National WEPs awards ceremonies will take place in the 7 WeEmpowerAsia countries in November 2020. The WEPs awards ceremony in Việt Nam will be in the middle of November 2020 in Hà Nội.
  2. The regional WEPs awards will take place as an interactive virtual event on Dec 10, 2020.
