This year also marks the 40th Anniversary of cooperation between the Government of Viet Nam and UNFPA. Ha Noi, 5 July 2017 – The Minister of Planning and Investment, H.E. Nguyen Chi Dzung, as assigned by the Prime Minister of the Government of Viet Nam, and the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Viet Nam, H.E. Kamal Malhotra, on behalf of the United Nations, signed the new Government of Viet Nam – United Nations Joint One Strategic Plan (OSP) for period 2017 – 2021 between the Government of Viet Nam and 18 UN Agencies: FAO, ILO, IOM, ITC, IAEA, UNAIDS, UNCTAD, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UN-Habitat, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNODC, UNV, UN Women and WHO.
Ha Noi, June 29, 2017 – Globally, 15 million girls marry every year before they reach there eigtheenth birthday. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development set Target 5.3 to eliminate all harmful practices including child, early and forced marriage by 2030. In Viet Nam, despite the Law on Marriage and Family setting the minimum legal age for marriage at 18 for women and 20 for men, 11% of women aged 20-49 years were married or in union before the age of 18. Moreover, the continuing disparities across regions and ethnic groups mean that communities that are left behind socio-economic development and progress towards gender equality struggle with higher prevalence of child marriage. The first national survey on social-economic conditions of 53 ethnic minority groups conducted by the Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA) and the General Statistics Office in 2015 revealed that the average rate of child marriage among the 53 ethnic minority groups was as high as 26.6%, with some ethnic minority communities showing very high rates of early and child marriage ranging from 50 to 70%.
NEW YORK, 28 June 2017 – Investing in the health and survival of the most deprived children and communities provides more value for money, saving almost twice as many lives for every US$1 million spent as equivalent investments in less deprived groups, according to a new UNICEF analysis.
Ha Noi, 19 June 2017 – In implementation of the Education Sector’s Action Plan on Gender Equality 2016-2020, a survey on the impact of current policies for teachers (at primary and secondary schools) on children’s education in mountainous and economically disadvantaged areas was carried out. Results of the survey will contribute to the development of recommendations on necessary policy changes for improved teaching, learning conditions and education quality in impoverished regions of Viet Nam.
NEW YORK, 16 June 2017 – More than half – or 55 per cent - of children aged between 3 and 4 years-old in 74 countries – approximately 40 million – have fathers who do not play or engage in early learning activities with them, according to a new UNICEF analysis. This is also the case for nearly 40 per cent of children aged between 3 and 4 years-old in Viet Nam.
Ha Noi, 12 June 2017 – The International Workshop on Early Childhood Education will be held in Hanoi during 12-13 June by Viet Nam Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in partnership with the World Bank and UNICEF. With the theme "Early Childhood Education - International and South East Asian Trends", the workshop will serve as a forum for information sharing to catch up with global and regional trends in early childhood education, particularly in South East Asia.
