WHOVN017 – An institution to conduct an assessment to determine prevalence of human Fascioliasis in central provinces and to provide interventions (counselling and treatment) to identified cases.
1. Background:
Human fascioliasis is a food-borne trematode infection caused by the liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. Humans acquire infection through ingestion of metacercariae on contaminated aquatic plants or in contaminated water. Transmission is associated with livestock reservoirs, freshwater snail intermediate hosts, contaminated water, and consumption of raw or undercooked aquatic plants.
In Viet Nam, human fascioliasis has been reported across the country, with Central Viet Nam and the Central Highlands representing important areas for continued surveillance and case detection. Coastal areas often have high prevalence of Fascioliasis due to dietary and living conditions that may facilitate transmission; however, community-based epidemiological data are limited in these areas.
A community-based survey is needed to provide updated information on the epidemiological distribution of human fascioliasis, identify individuals requiring clinical assessment and management, and facilitate appropriate treatment in accordance with national guidelines.
Objectives
• Determine the seroprevalence of Fasciola antibodies in residents aged 10 years and older at the selected survey sites using ELISA.
• Identify individuals with positive serological results and suspected fascioliasis, conduct appropriate clinical and parasitological assessment, and provide or facilitate treatment in accordance with relevant Ministry of Health guidance.
• Analyze and report epidemiological findings to support surveillance and updating of the fascioliasis distribution map for Central Viet Nam and the Central Highlands.
2. Planned timelines:
